HOW MANY PHOTOS SHOULD YOU VIRTUALLY STAGE IN A REAL ESTATE LISTING?

Virtual Staging is one of the most effective ways to help buyers visualize a vacant property. But that doesn't mean every room needs to be staged. So how many photos should you actually stage?

The short answer: for most listings, three to five strategically chosen images are enough to make a significant impact.

Focus on the Rooms That Matter Most

Rather than virtually staging every vacant room, concentrate on the spaces buyers care about most. These rooms carry the emotional weight of a listing. They're what help a buyer picture their life in the home. Typically, that means:

  • Living room
  • Primary bedroom
  • Dining area
  • Home office
  • Outdoor entertaining space

Together, these spaces tell the story of the home and give buyers a reason to book a viewing. Choosing the right interior design style is just as important as choosing the right rooms to stage.

The Virtual Staging Sweet Spot

A good rule of thumb is to virtually stage 20 to 30% of your listing photos.

The size of the property should also guide how many images you stage. A small condo may only need two or three staged photos, while a large, vacant luxury home can benefit from several more.

Property TypeRecommended Virtual Staging Images
Studio or Condo2 to 3
Standard Family Home3 to 5
Large Family Home4 to 6
Luxury Home5 to 8
Fully Vacant Luxury Estate8 to 10

The goal is to showcase the property's key selling points and create an emotional connection with potential buyers.

Does Every Vacant Room Need Virtual Staging?

Not necessarily.

If a room's purpose is obvious, like a bathroom, a hallway, or a laundry room, buyers can usually understand it without added furniture. Virtual staging delivers the most value in larger, open-plan areas or spaces that are hard to interpret when empty, such as a bonus room or an oddly shaped living area.

For luxury homes or fully vacant properties, a few extra staged images can help highlight unique features and lifestyle appeal. But quality and strategy will always outperform quantity.

Consider Staging the Same Room From Multiple Angles

Staging a single room from two different perspectives can be just as valuable as staging two separate rooms, especially in open-plan layouts or large living spaces where one photo can't capture the full picture.

A wide shot from the entryway shows how the space flows and how furniture fits within the overall footprint. A second image taken from the opposite corner can highlight details buyers care about, like the fireplace, built-in shelving, or the view through the windows. Together, the two images give buyers a more complete sense of scale and proportion, which is one of the hardest things to judge from a single photo of an empty room.

This approach also builds trust. When buyers see consistent furniture and styling across multiple angles of the same room, the staging reads as a realistic representation of the space rather than a one-off marketing image. Keeping the staging consistent across every image is also an important part of using Virtual Staging ethically and setting accurate buyer expectations. Just be sure the furnishings match from shot to shot, since mismatched styling between angles can undermine the effect.

For most listings, one or two rooms shown from multiple angles is plenty. Focus on your hero spaces, typically the living room or an open-plan kitchen and dining area. Staging multiple angles of these spaces helps buyers understand how the rooms connect and how the home flows.

Make Every Image Count

When used thoughtfully, virtual staging can help your listing stand out online, generate more interest, and encourage more property viewings.

Instead of asking, "How many photos should I stage?" ask, "Which photos will have the greatest impact?"

By focusing on the most important spaces, you'll maximize your marketing budget while giving buyers the inspiration they need to envision the property as their future home.
