THE SIMPLE TRICK FOR OPENING OR CLOSING BLINDS IN PROPERTY PHOTOS

Capturing the perfect property photo is both an art and a science. Every detail in the frame matters, and the choice to open or close window blinds can impact how valuable a home feels to a buyer.

This guide will break down exactly how to handle blinds for the best results every single time!

The Lighting Rule: Bright Spaces Perform Better

In most situations, opening the blinds is the right approach when preparing a home for photos. In certain cases, it may not be the best choice. The short answer is, when in doubt, open the blinds.

Proper lighting is essential in making a space feel larger, so natural light is your best friend. Open curtains or blinds to let in as much natural light as possible. A well-lit space appears more expansive and welcoming, creating the emotional response you want a potential buyer to feel when scrolling through listings.

This rule is non-negotiable for the front exterior photo of the home. When shooting the outside of the house, open blinds present the home as bright and full of life, helping create strong curb appeal.

When Closing (or Partially Closing) Blinds is the Smarter Move

A strong interior can be undermined if the view outside is distracting or unappealing. In real estate photos, the window view matters just as much as the room itself. Managing it well can also create a greater sense of privacy by reducing visibility of neighboring properties.

Always check what is visible through each window. If the view is not helping the photo, adjust the blinds to improve focus without losing natural light.

The 45-Degree Angle for Shutters and Venetian Blinds

For shutters, tilt the slats to around 45 degrees. For Venetian blinds, do the same. This blocks most of the outside view while still letting natural light into the room. The result is a bright image with a softer, more private feel.

Strategic Lowering for Pull-Down and Half-Mask Blinds

For pull-down blinds, lower them to just above fence height to block neighboring properties while keeping the room well lit.

This helps keep attention on the interior and creates a cleaner, more private-looking space in the photo.

If the property has attractive landscaping, adjust the blind so the garden is visible while hiding distractions like fences, bins, or neighboring buildings.

Focus on What Sells

The question of opening or closing blinds is a strategic decision that separates amateur snapshots from professional marketing assets.

The right approach is a balanced one:

  • Open blinds to maximize natural light and create an inviting atmosphere.
  • Strategically angle or partially close blinds to eliminate distracting exterior views.
